Introduction
Chemical reactions occur all around us. What do chemical reactions have in common? How many different chemical reactions are there? Use this activity to explore the world of chemical reactions and decide for yourself the characteristics of chemical reactions.

Questions
  1. What happens to matter and energy in a chemical reaction?

  2. Give 3 examples of chemical reactions.

  3. What do you call the items on the two sides of a chemical reaction?

  4. If there are 8 oxygen and 4 hydrogen atoms on the left side of the equation, how many of each will be on the right?

  5. What kind of reaction involves two elements reacting with each other to form a new compound?

  6. What kind of chemical reaction involves oxygen as a reactant and releases heat?

  7. What kind of chemical reaction starts with a compound and breaks it down into smaller molecules?

  8. What is the difference between an endothermic and exothermic reaction?

  9. Give an example of a reaction that requires activation energy and of a spontaneous reaction – What is different in how these reactions occur?

  10. By looking at examples of single-displacement and double-displacement reactions, what do all displacement reactions have in common?
