Introduction
Short for Picture Element, a pixel is a single point in a graphic image. Graphics monitors display pictures by dividing the display screen into thousands (or millions) of pixels, arranged in rows and columns. The pixels are so close together that they appear connected.

DIRECTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT

1. Create a new folder in your Pictures folder, and label it “Art Class Images.”

2. On the webquest, click “Art Museums” and then “Brooklyn Museum of Art.”

3. Click “The Eye of the Artist.” Explore these images, and read about the art. Answer the questions on your sheet.

4. Click on the website about artist Chuck Close
Read the page, answer questions on your sheet. Then look at photos of Close’s work.
YOU CANNOT USE THESE PHOTOS FOR YOUR PROJECT!

5. Go back, and begin exploring this museum and others...

6. Find at least 5 different portraits (not by Chuck Close). Save them into your “Art Class Images” folder by right-clicking the image,
and clicking “save as.”

7. When you have 5 images saved, open Microsoft Office Picture Manager by double-clicking it on the desktop.

8. Open your folder labeled “Art Class Images” by double-clicking it.

9. Double-click one of the portraits you saved. You’re going to edit this image.

10. Click “edit” on the right. Click “crop.” Drag the crop marks in until all you have inside the box is the head of your portrait (very
little background, if any).

11. Next, click on “color.” Lower saturation to nothing. Also, increase contrast to 100%.

12. Click “print” and follow the prompts. Find the option for an “8x10 inch Print” and click it. Continue printing.

13. Repeat steps 9-12 with all the images you saved (about 5).
