Introduction
This hotlist focuses on the desert biome, specifically for the 5th grade, but includes some great sites for researching all of the world's biomes. Remember to preview sites before using them with your students.
The Internet Resources
All Biomes
Earth Science Explorer: Biomes - This site is very student-friendly. It gives a summary of the biomes, plus individual information about each.
MBG Net - Biomes of the World - From the Missouri Botanical Garden, I would consider this site the best of the Web. You can find all of the information you need, including pictures, of each of the biomes of the world. Each section follows the same basic format giving information on the location, plants, and animals of each area.
Mission: Biomes - From NASA, this site provides the following information in an easy to follow format: temperature, precipitation, vegetation, and location. It includes a teacher resource link with information to assist you in using the site as a teaching tool. Be sure to have your students do the 'Great Graph Match' and the 'To Plant or Not to Plant' online activities - very cool.
The World's Biomes - Extensive information from the University of California, Berkeley, Museum of Paleontology. Lots of text; not as many pictures.
World Biomes - Provides a world map with the location of the world's biomes. Each biome name is linked to more information.
Biomes/Habitats - At this area in Enchanted Learning you will find maps, animal printouts, and information on each of the biomes individually, and presented in an easy-to-read chart.
