This list of sites selected for lower elementary students has teacher resources, student resources, and photos galore. Remember to preview sites before using them with your students.

The Internet Resources

Best All Around Site

All About Butterflies - From Enchanted Learning, this is your one-stop-shopping site. If you choose to use no other sites, this one will fulfill all of your needs as it covers the life cycle and anatomy of butterflies. It also includes an illustrated glossary, classroom activities, crafts, and links to additional sites.

Teacher Resources

The Journey North - This is actually a cluster of lessons by a 3rd grade teacher. Students learn about the life cycle and migration of butterflies through science and other cross-curricular activities. Excellent teacher resource.

Student Resources

Butterflies: On the Wings of Freedom - This excellent Think Quest entry is designed especially for kids. It is presented in a logical format that allows you or the student to select the topic you are interested in. It covers information on the life cycle, parts of the body, and more.
Insecta Inspecta World - Monarch Butterfly - General information on the monarch butterfly. It includes a link to a map and information about migration patterns.
The Children's Butterfly Site - Maintained by Montana State University, this site designed for students has photographs, life cycle information, and activities including coloring pages.
Where Do Butterflies Come From? - From the Cool Science for Curious Kids site, this page has some basic general life cycle information along with instructions for an art project that shows the metamorphosis.

Photographs

Butterfly Collection at the Field Museum - Lots of general information about butterflies and their life cycle, and dozens of photographs from the museum's collection.
The Butterfly Conservatory - Tropical Butterflies Alive in Winter - From the American Museum of Natural History, this site includes live webcams of its butterflies in addition to other videos (just in case you catch the live ones when they're not doing anything). You can take a virtual tour of the conservatory and learn how to grow a butterfly garden.
The Butterfly Website - A photo gallery of butterflies, moths, and caterpillars. If intending to use the photos for presentations, please note the copyright information on each photo.
