Introduction
As a twelve or thirteen year old what is your job? Describe a typical day in your life.

What does 'child labor' mean to you?

When the industrial revolution first came to Britain and the U.S., there was a high demand for labor. Families quickly migrated from the rural farm areas to the newly industrialized cities to find work. Once they got there, things did not look as bright as they thought it would. To survive in even the lowest level of poverty, families had to have every able member of the family go to work. This led to the high rise in child labor in factories. Children were not treated well, overworked, and underpaid for a long time before anyone tried to change things for them.

Unfortunately, child labor still exists in the world today.

What have we learned from the 19th and 20th centuries? What do we know about child labor in the 21st century?

Look at the images of children in the the United States in the early 1900's. Look at the images of some children in 2009 around the world. Compare the conditions of the 1900's with those of today.
