Introduction
The 'Witch of Blackbird Pond' by Elizabeth George Speare provides us with a vivid picture of colonial Connecticut as it traces one year in the life of Kit Tyler who has recently arrived from Barbados. Kit's relatively free upbringing in the Caribbean clashes with the stern Puritan way of life, and the cold weather and the icy suspicion of the townspeople combine to make Kit's transition difficult.

Elizabeth George Speare, in speaking about her writing said, 'I do not believe a historical novel should gloss over the pain and ugliness. But I do believe that the hero...should on the last page...still be standing, with the strength to go on to whatever the future may hold.'

This enduring tale of friendship explores the prejudices and social contraints of the Puritan era.

Let's research life in colonial America. Let's look at the customs and daily life of these people to better understand what life was like for Kit. What do you find most intriguing about life in colonial days? What don't you like about life back in that time?
