Dear ERTs (Emergency Response Team):

In preparation for your e-mission, in gifted class, you have been and will continue to learn skills that will assist you in completing a successful mission. Will your ERT be ready if a hurricane hits Montserrat? Will you be prepared if the Soufrière Hills Volcano erupts? Will your emergency response team have a contingency plan if both events occur simultaneously?

Listed below are various Internet links that will help you prepare for mission day and keep the citizens of Montserrat safe. By investigating these websites you may learn more about Montserrat, volcanoes, and hurricanes. Have fun exploring!

As you are exploring, you may wish to think about:

1)How is Soufrière Hills Volcano currently behaving? You can get a daily update at the MVO (Montserrat Volcanic Observatory)!

2)What is the culture on the island? Where do people live on the island and what resources are available that may assist you are ERTs in keeping the citizens safe? Think about how you may evacuate people and where you will evacuate them to....

3)How should the citizens prepare for a hurricane? What will you tell them if a hurricane is approaching that is rated a 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1? How will your recommendations change?

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - On mission day, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will be providing you with updates on the atmospheric conditions if there is a hurricane or air related issues due to an eruption of the Soufrière Hills Volcano.
