Introduction
Mt. Everest must be the most famous mountain in the world. Because it is the highest mountain in the world and it has a great history. Because of its height, it had been difficult to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, as measured by the height of its summit above sea level. The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in High Asia, is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet.

Mount Everest has had a lasting effect on all of those who have challenged its heights.

Let us look at what it takes to conquer (climb)this huge mountain. What do you think it was like to climb Mount Everest in the 1920's when George Mallory made a summit attempt... or in 1953 when Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit...and finally what do you think it would be like today?

Use the sites below to help answer the following questions:

1. Why did these climbers want to climb Mount Everest?

2. What kinds of clothing and equipment did they take with them?

3. How many other climbers did they see as they attempted to climb Mount Everest?

4. What kind of publicity did their trips generate?
