Introduction
Using the internet has increased the need for all school community members to be aware of copyright and plagiarism issues.

The following Hotlist has been carefully selected to provide a comprehensive list of websites, with a focus on Australian content, to outline copyright and plagiarism issues.

The list provides links that will inform students, parents and educators why the understanding and prevention of plagiarism is so important.

McKenzie, (1998)says that by preventing plagiarism the students will have a much better chance of improving learning outcomes across all curriculum areas.

For educators I have included links that offer various useful strategies to assist in the prevention of plagiarism.

Communities need to build skills in teachers and students that will lead to an increase in all students’ abilities to create and present their own original thoughts and ideas.

Together community members can then successfully help to build strong, ethical, learning communities.

A Visit to Copyright Bay - This award winning site aims to inform and entertain educators about copyright issues. Learn while you explore Copyright Bay. Take a multimedia trip around the bay to discover the issues of copyright.There is a text version available.
Australian Copyright Aware - The site map shows clearly the range of valuable copyright related information available arranged in different sections for different audiences- school staff, librarians and students. There are plenty of informative links available such as one of the links to teachers- Copyright Changes: What it means for your teaching?
Copyright - From Palmerston District School Website, Braxton (2004) provides a comprehensive summary of copyright and moral rights. Braxton lists the implications of copyright for Australian Government schools. The webpage also outlines the five licenses that the education department pays for which allow educational institutions some flexibility with copyright.

Classroom Concerns: Legal and Ethical Implications of Internet Misuse - Dan Davidson and Wayne Saubert are concerned that the problems presented by plagiarism and infringements raise legal and ethical concerns. They would like to see 'the problems more widely recognised and addressed by heightened awareness and improved educational treatment.' Internet Plagiarism - Preate's(2002)PowerPoint presentation explores the issue of plagiarism and methods to prevent it. Preate outlines the concept of working as a community and developing policy to combat the problem.
The New Plagiarism:Seven Antidotes to Prevent Highway Robbery in an Electronic Age - The article from 'From Now On.' The Educational Technology Journal, May, 1998 by Jamie McKenzie provides answers to the problem of 'the new' plagiarism- caused by the ease by which students can access huge amounts of information by using the 'electronic shovel.' Still highly relevant.
What is Plagiarism? (and why kids should care!) - Valenza (2003)provides a stimulating PowerPoint presentation. The first section is directed at creating an awareness of plagiarism and providing alternatives for students. The second section concentrates on outlining preventative measures for teachers.
What is plagiarism? - The Learning Centre Academic Skills at The University of New South Wales explores the issue of plagiarism in sections: What is Plagiarism?; Common Forms of Plagiarism; Plagiarism & the Internet and How to Avoid Plagiarism.It is most suitable for educators, parents and High School students.

Teach the teachers

A 10 Point Counter Plagiarism Strategy - It is possible to significantly reduce or eliminate plagiarism by designing tasks thoughtfully. The purpose of this site is to provide information and resources for any educator interested in strategies for countering plagiarism.

Learning Resources: Plagiarism and the Internet - Lamb suggests many strategies for teachers to use to help students avoid plagiarising. The website lists many learning resources for teachers with different learning styles to access including a selection of PowerPoint presentations to watch, many articles to read, a tutorial to complete and a self test to take.
Plagiarism - This is an Aussie Educators page. The webpage begins by providing two definitions of plagiarism. It then introduces a list of cheat sites because they provide a starting point for people to check from if they have doubts and then lists many reasons why students should avoid the essays. The website describes many links that could be of assistance in helping teachers with the prevention of plagiarism.
Plagiarism: Sin or Symptom? - A valuable handout which encourages educators to explore the use of three terrific strategies to encourage students to work through the research process to avoid copying: I Search, Concept Mapping and Web Quests. It also links to an informative PowerPoint presentation which reinforces the need for students to work through the information process to avoid plagiarism.
Research Skills - This website leads teachers to worthwhile sites to explore to assist them in designing better assignments that will reduce the chance of plagiarism. It guides:-'Good questions should begin good research.' and a PowerPoint presentation by Education Queensland and Lindy McKeown addresses: 'Curing Read and Regurgitate Disease.'
Resourcing the Curriculum- Plagiarism - This site offers a range of links to help provide teachers with further valuable information from well recognised experts on the issue of plagiarism. One of the nost valuable links for helping teachers to gain a clear overview of how to prevent plagiarism is 'The New Plagiarism'-which presents seven methods that teachers can employ to prevent electronic plagiarism. Teachers need to be well informed to be able to help students avoid plagiarising. There is also a link to 'Citing electronic and other sources of information' to help students learn to effectively cite their sources.
e-cheating: Combating a 21st Century Challenge - Kim Mc Murtry offers eight suggestions for a teacher to combat e-cheating.

Copyright for kids - This website is especially for kids. Go on an interactive adventure. Take part in all the activities. Discover what copyright really means. There is a test you can take at the end to see what you really do know! There are six questions with full answers provided on the next page.
KidsHealth: What is Plagiarism? - This kid friendly site cover the following four areas: Plagiarism Steals Ideas Plagiarism Is Lazy What Happens if I Plagiarise? Avoiding Plagiarism It also includes an Anti-Plagiarism Checklist to help students when completing an assignment or project.
Oregon School Library Information System- Secondary - This webpage, aimed at secondary students, is an excellent outline of the research process. It explores plagiarism and how to avoid it. Follow the links:Gathering and Organizing Information- to avoid plagiarism and Citing Sources. The website also provides a link to a free MLA based citation maker.There are a selection of self test quizzes designed to reinforce the valuable information presented.
Oregon School Library Information System-How to take notes - This website is directed at younger students. It examines how to take notes and explains that plagiarism is stealing. Follow the links to 'elementary how to' to find other valuable information on researching. The website also provides a link to a free MLA based citation machine.
