An Internet Hotlist on The Outsiders

Introduction
There are two kinds of people in the world, right? The greasers and the socs. If you're poor and an outsider, you're a greaser and life is tough. If you have money and hang with the in crowd, you're a soc and life is easy. In essence, greasers are bad and socs are good.

What do you think? Is the world really divided into two types of people? Are things really that black and white? Where do you fit in?

Your Task

1. Choose a character from the following list that you relate to; someone that you connect with and understand.

-Ponyboy Curtis (the youngest greaser and a good fighter)
-Darry (works hard as a roofer)
-Soda Pop (handsome dropout)
-Johnny (victim of child abuse and everyone's pet)
-Two-Bit Matthews (funny guy who loves school)
-Steve Randle (good with cars)
-Dally (went to jail in New York City for three years)
-Cherry Valence (soc)
-Evie ('greasy' girl, tough)

2. Complete the worksheet provided by Mrs. Gennosa and Mrs. Cinco. It will contain questions about your character's looks, personality, thoughts and emotions, role in the story, and social status.

3. Use the answers from the worksheet to help you write three to five sentences that describe your character. This description will help you create a poster-size collage for the character you choose.

4. Print out the description that you write and paste it on your poster.

5.Use the links below to find photographs and clipart that describe your character (the description you wrote should help you find what you need). Print the images and photographs that you find and paste them onto your poster.

6. Use Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher to create descriptive words for your character and to find clip art. Print them out and paste them onto your poster.

7. Present your final poster to the class.

8. Discuss as a class, whether or not all greasers are bad and all socs are good. Use your character to defend your viewpoint.
