Vocabulary Games and Spelling

Vocabulary Games and Spelling - This site is good for spelling but doesn't allow a lot of response time. Under Speedwords on the right side, the categories will be listed: male and female, opposites, past tense of irregular verbs, etc. After selecting a category, 10 words are shown, one every 10 seconds. The goal is to use the letters given to spell out the answer to each question as quickly as possible. The time limit makes this harder than it appears originally. Users who like to compete will hope to finish before the time runs out. Appropriate for Intermediate or Advanced ESL learners.

Academic Vocabulary

English Gateway - Description: Online vocabulary lessons (with audio) for intermediate and advanced ESL learners. Exercises on idioms, phrasal verbs and collocations. Student/teacher blog and worksheets.
Vocabulary Exercises for Academic Word Lists - This site created by Gerry Luton contains 10 Academic Word Lists (Sublists) with corresponding matching exercises within groups in each sublist. Words included are commonly found in academic subjects, excluding any technical words. Appropriate for Upper Intermediate to Advanced ESL learners as well as transitional ESL, and GED students.
Vocabulary for GED thru Pre-College - This site offers a nice selection of vocabulary normally found in GED materials, pre-college and periodicals. There are 10 multiple choice quizzes requiring synonyms, 25 lists of new vocabulary with part of speech and sentences using these words, and additional practice matching the word to a given sentence. This site uses very commonly used words appropriate for GED and beyond. It's great for extra vocabulary building. Appropriate for GED and Advanced ESL learners.

Picture Vocabulary

Picture Vocabulary - Excellent selection of picture vocabulary covering 21 major topic areas. Within these topic areas are alphabetized lists of key words including clear photos introducing the word with the picture. User can click on each photo and hear the pronunciation. Additional exercises include matching the word to the picture by dragging it directly on the picture. Immediate feedback is given when user identifes correct response and earns a Yellow Star and EXCELLENT! Each lesson includes a memory game and some have hangman activities and crossword puzzles. Appropriate for Basic to Low Intermediate ESL learners.
Vocabulary Name Recognition - Since this site originates from Vancouver Community College, there will be Canadian references; site covers common terms such as sickness, food, clothing, etc. Good practice site but students can't hear the vocabulary word pronounced, except in section on Feelings and Emotions. Exercises range from multiple choice, short answer quizzes, gap-filling, matching and crossword puzzles at Literacy Levels and Levels 1-3. Besides vocabulary, site also has some grammar, idioms, and word order. Appropriate for Basic to Intermediate ESL learners.
Vocabulary With Pictures - The English Language Centre at the Univ. of Victoria, British Columbia, CA offers some nice basic vocabulary topics. Most topics are for Beginners but Animals and Food are more Intermediate. Minor differences in British English should be noted and section on Candian Coins can be omitted if using American English. Appropriate for Basic and Intermediate ESL learners.

General Vocabulary

Comprehensive Vocabulary Activities - A most impressive site which includes collocations, word formations, links, and a whole lot more. Best to take time to review this to give it justice. Appropriate for Mid to Advanced ESL but has a few sections for basic ESL as well.
Vocabulary In General - Eclectic group of worthwhile activities loosely categorized as vocabulary. Some grammar and context clues are used to reinforce the vocabulary. Although this site is British English with a strong influence in Spanish, those using American English can benefit as long as the language differences are noted. Section on the left labeled (Vocabulary: Easy, Very Easy) is lower level; Section to the right labeled Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs is higher level. Appropriate for all levels Basic to Advanced.
Vocabulary Size Test - This site presents a 50 multiple choice question Vocabulary Test, testing vocabulary size between 1,000 and 10,000 words. Appropriate for GED students, High Intermediate to Advanced ESL learners. Answers to this test are also provided.
Vocabulary With Themes - Great site from the U.K. so both British accents and some cultural tidbits are included. Basics are simple and Other Themes includes idioms, irregular verbs, culture, and pronunciation. Within each grouping, there is plenty of reinforcement using useful vocabulary, build up, naturally speaking sections, dialogues, and tests. Appropriate for Basic, Intermediate and Lower Advanced ESL learners.
