An Internet WebQuest on Science5

Introduction | The Task | The Process | Conclusion |

Introduction
Congratulations Scientists! You have been selected as part of an elite team of 5th graders to research the Skeletal System and its importance to the Human Body. You will work with a team of 2-3 for a couple of weeks to gather information and then present your findings to our class!

Task
You and your team will need to decide what tasks each of you will be in charge of completing. The work should be divided evenly among team members. In some cases, you may work on multiple tasks or you may all work together on both tasks. Once you have decided as a team who will be in charge of what components, you will create a proposal to submit for approval.

Proposal Forms are available from Mrs. Fochtman

You will use the links provided below as well as any other resources you can find (library books, etc.) to become experts on the skeletal system. You and your team will work together to create a presentation that you will give to our class. By completing this WebQuest, you should achieve the following goals: 1) learn information about the human skeletal system 2) use the power of the Internet for advanced exploration; 3) work within a team to do collaborative research and present your findings to your peers.

Process
You will be working together as a group exploring web sites that Mrs. Fochtman has selected. You should all start by exploring the research links provided before dividing your tasks among group members. As you conduct your research, have a notebook with you so that you can write down new information that is of interest to you. Simply said, TAKE NOTES on new things you learn. When you meet with your group, you can use this information to help you reach a consensus (agreement) about what to include in your presentation.

Here are some important questions to consider when doing your research. These questions MAY be good ones to consider when completing your project. Of course, there are MANY other questions to answer.

Description:

What is the skeletal system comprised of?
How many bones are there in a human skeleton?
What are the largest/smallest bones in our body?
What connects our bones to the rest of our body?
What are the main parts of our bones? What are they made up of?

Function:

What are the 3 main functions of the skeletal system?
Why is it necessary for our survival?
What different types of joints do we have and how do they function?
What are the functions of our bones?

Growth:

How do our bones grow?
What are our bones made of?
How do a baby’s skeletal system compare to the skeleton of a full grown adult?
Can we do anything to help our bones grow better and stronger?

Injury/Repair:

What are the different ways bones can be injured?
How does a doctor diagnose different types of breaks?
How are a break and a fracture different?
How should a break/fracture be treated so that it heals properly?

Phase 1 - Background Information
Textbooks to use as resources:
McGraw Hill Science (our red book)p. R20-R21
Prentice Hall Science Explorer (our green book) p. 12-23

Books from the library will also be available in the classroom to use as resources.

Phase 2 - Roles
You will be working with your team to create and present your findings to the other teams. With your team, you will be responsible for preparing the following materials to assist you in your presentation.

Your presentation should include:

1. A picture book about the Human Skeleton.

This book should present the information that you have learned in an easy format for younger children to enjoy. AT LEAST 8 PAGES NEED TO HAVE A FULL COLOR PICTURE, ILLUSTRATING WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN.

Make sure to cover a variety of topics. Refer to the questions in the webquest above for ideas.

YOUR BOOK MUST BE AT LEAST 16 PAGES LONG. As a minimum, your book must have 2 pages on Description, 2 pages on Function, 2 pages on Growth, and 2 pages on Injury/Repair. It is up to you what other information you would like to include in the other 8 pages.

In addition to these requirements, you will be graded on the accuracy of your information, varying levels of complexity of your information, and neatness of your overall book.

2. A Model of the Skeletal System

Your model must be hand-made from materials that are available from Mrs. Fochtman. At least 15 bones must be clearly labeled. You will be graded on neatness and accuracy of your labeling.

Phase 3 - Reaching Consensus
Make sure to work together and reach a consensus on how the work will be divided before beginning your project. Remember, you must all do the research.

Conclusion
Congratulations Scientists! You are about to embark on a wonderful journey. Communicate, share ideas, and get your team organized! We look forward to your presentation!
